There are direct flights from London and other European cities to Salzburg, but not from the United States. Americans can fly to Munich and take the 90-minute train ride to Salzburg. If you fly to Munich, you can take the 90-minute train ride to Salzburg.
Alternatively, you can take a transfer bus from or to the Munich
airport: contact Salzburger Mietwagenservice for details. Taxis are
the easiest way to get downtown from the Salzburg airport; the ride
costs around EUR13-EUR14 and takes about 20 minutes. City Bus No.
2, which makes a stop by the airport every 15 minutes, runs down
to Salzburg's train station (about 20 minutes), where you can change
to Bus No. 3 or 5 for the city center. The fastest routes to Salzburg are the autobahns. From Vienna (320 km [198 mi]), take A1; from Munich (150 km [93 mi]), A8 (in Germany it's also E11); from Italy, A10. The only advantage to having a car in Salzburg is that you can get
out of the city for short excursions or for cheaper accommodations.
The Old City on both sides of the river is a pedestrian zone (except
for taxis), and the rest of the city, with its narrow, one-way streets,
is a driver's nightmare. CallCenter (43) 05-1717
